Bruce Schneier heeft een aardig artikeltje geschreven over de volstrekt debiele reactie van veiligheidsdiensten op de mislukte aanslag met PETN door een Nigeriaan tijdens Kerstmis. Hij stelt terecht dat alle voorgestelde maatregelen zich uitsluitend richten op de uitvoering van deze mislukte aanslag in plaats van op de dreiging zelf. Veiligheidsmaatregelen faalden immers al voordat de Nigeriaan bij de luchthaven was aangekomen. Daarnaast is het overduidelijk dat alle maatregelen die men neemt telkens opnieuw resulteren in een nieuwe tactiek van terroristen die je niet kunt voorzien. Of zoals hij zelf zegt “The problem with all these measures is that they’re only effective if we guess the plot correctly (…) It’s magical thinking: If we defend against what the terrorists did last time, we’ll somehow defend against what they do one time (…) The real security failure on Christmas Day was in our reaction. We’re reacting out of fear, wasting money on the story rather than securing ourselves against the threat. Abdulmutallab succeeded in causing terror even though his attack failed.”
